Coursework: Pre-production planning

1) Music video treatment

The music video for "21" by Gracie Abrams, reimagined by Selene Nyx, captures the essence of indie pop through a nostalgic lens. Her artistic identity relies heavily on her uniqueness and her performing in the indie pop genre adds to that, Also, her music has a narrative focus using relatable experiences and her visual style ties it together with warm colours and candid illustrations. I plan to show the bond between two people, then their falling out and distancing, then the self reflection. I will then layer the video with illustrations. In regards to progression, the video entails my artist finding the shoes, this triggers a series of flashbacks in the present, the story follows my artist on her way to the friends house giving the shoes back.

2) Mise-en-scene planning

Plan everything that will appear in front of the camera in your music video - and this is vital when it comes to music video and music genre.

Remember CLAMPS: Costume, Lighting, Actors (cast, placement, movement, expression), Make-up, Props, Setting.

Costume
My artist will wear comfortable clothing that regular teenagers wear to appear more relatable

Lighting
I will rely on natural lighting that is soft and bright. I may have LED to change the feel of certain scenes that are indoors.

Actors/performers
I will be acting as my own artist and my friend will be co staring with me

Make-up
I will be wearing makeup in scenes and there will be a scene where I am crying and the viewer will see the makeup on my face smudged

Props
I will be using a guitar for a performance section. I will also have a birthday cake to match the lyrics of the song. There will also be a journal in the opening of the MV

Setting
The video will open in a bedroom, the flashbacks will be in multiple locations like the park, in an arcade, in a kitchen baking.

3) Shot list

The final aspect of your pre-production planning is to write a comprehensive shot list for every single possible shot you plan to film for your music video. For three minutes of music video, that is going to be a LOT of shots - quite possibly more than 200.
