Film & TV Language: Mise-en-scene

 1) Find a distinctive still image and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson.

The tree tells us its Christmas and the boy has a present in his hand that he may be putting under the tree. The man behind him is in all black which contrast to the bright color scheme. The color black has connotations of mystery, danger and power. The mysterious man spying on the young boy wears a frown on his face which could mean he has bad intentions

The color scheme is soft with warm colors to present a safe welcoming environment. The young people sitting all wear uniform to show they are equal students. The teacher is towering above them which also represents his superiority. They all look up at him with admiration and he smiles down at them to show both the teacher and the students are engaging

2) Find TWO film or TV extracts on YouTube from different genres (e.g. horror, sci-fi, costume drama). Embed them in your blogpost and write a comparison of the mise-en-scene in each.

There is a clear power imbalance between the hostage and the aggressors and this is further portrayed through the low and high angle shots. They switch between each to remind the audience the who plays the role of the inferior and the superior. The aggressor wears a black suit and black has the connotations of mystery, danger and power. The gun  represents his rage and frustration during his interrogation. The setting seems secretive and private so the aggressors can do there criminal activity without the worry of being seen. The gun reinforces the action genre.

This is set in the comfort of the characters home which is similar to the setting in pulp fiction as they are both domestic settings. The genres are different as this is the opening scene to a horror movie. This clip is largely a mysterious phone call which almost creates the same tense atmosphere in the pulp fiction clip. The character here is a girl which contrasts the pulp fiction clip with only male characters
